16th Nile Council of Ministers Of Water Affairs Meeting
The 16th Nile Council of Ministers of Water Affairs (Nile-COM) of the Nile basin countries meeting will take place in Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of Congo from 21-22nd July 2008. The meeting is expected to address key issues including institutional reforms, process of cooperative framework finalization, and progress in implementation of the development track of the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI).  Sustainability of the Shared Vision Program Projects' outputs as projects approach completion will also be top on the agenda.

The Nile-COM serves as the highest decision making body of the NBI. It provides strategic direction and guidance to the overall NBI process, setting an agenda and priorities for the period to follow. The council of Ministers meeting will be preceded by the 26th Nile Technical Advisory Committee (Nile-TAC) meeting. The Nile-TAC, composed of two senior officials from each member country support the Nile-COM.
 
NBI Commemorates the 2008 World Environment Day

The Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) organized the Nile Week during 2nd – 5th June 2008, as part of the activities to mark the World Environment day (WED), commemorated each year on 5 June. NBI annually dedicates the WED week to reflect on the environmental threats in the basin and organizes various activities aimed at raising awareness and demonstrating participatory interventions.  The Nile Transboundary Environmental Action Project (NTEAP), of the NBI,  spearheaded the activities and all basin countries celebrated the WED week.

asking countries, companies and communities to focus on greenhouse gas emissions and how to reduce them. The World Environment Day  highlighted resources and initiatives that promote low carbon economies and life-styles, such as improved energy efficiency, alternative energy sources, forest conservation and eco-friendly consumption

Climate variability which is known to be a cause of Flooding in parts of the Nile basin. Cases of extensive damage to agricultural crops, livestock, houses, schools, loss of lives etc, caused by large scale floods, have been recorded in the basin. Climate change may make such severe flood events more frequent.

The focus of the global 2008 celebrations hosted in New Zealand was on the solutions and the opportunities for countries, companies and communities to "Kick the habit" and de-carbonize their economies and life-styles.
Activities of the NBI during the Nile week focused on tree planting, coupled with other activities such as concerts, songs, rallies, football matches etc.
World Environment Day is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.
